ITU-R Study Group 1 Holds First Post-Pandemic In-Person Meeting

Geneva, Switzerland – 6 July 2022. The recent meeting of Study Group 1 of the Radiocommunication Bureau of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) was held in Geneva, Switzerland and was the first in-person meeting of the group convened by the ITU since before the pandemic began. Study Group 1 focuses on radio spectrum management and spectrum monitoring, and the meeting was attended virtually and in person by 250 delegates of more than 40 countries and 20 scientific/industrial organizations from around the world.

TCI attends ITU-R Study Group 1 meeting, which focuses on radio spectrum management and spectrum monitoring

This meeting of the Radiocommunication Bureau witnessed a number of significant accomplishments:

  • Completion of revisions to Report SM.2257 on spectrum monitoring during major events, including the Japanese experience with the Olympic Games.
  • In-depth discussions about the relatively new and active field of spectrum monitoring from drones.
  • Extensive revision of Report SM.2452: Electromagnetic field measurements to assess human exposure.
  • Discussion of several other important topics, including the use of artificial intelligence and big data for spectrum monitoring, with decisions as to how to continue to develop these topics over the next year.

In addition, the ITU is about to embark on a major update to the ITU-R Handbook on Spectrum Monitoring, and TCI International will be working alongside other members to ensure that its guiding set of principles propel the future of spectrum monitoring.

According to TCI’s ITU representative Roy Woolsey, “It was nice to be back together and work with other delegates in person, including many that I have had the pleasure of working with in past years, rather than only having meetings “virtually” as we did the last two years.”

The Radiocommunication Bureau of the ITU has several study groups that address various radiocommunication issues. As an associate member of Study Group 1, TCI collaborates with other members to further the development of the guiding principles for spectrum monitoring and management
