Ionospheric Sounder
TCI produces specialized equipment to measure the characteristics of the ionosphere using our ionospheric sounders. TCI’s ionspheric sounders provide the necessary real-time data to optimize SSL (Single Site Location) capability in the HF bands by measuring the ionospheric height due to current ionospheric conditions – the greatest unknown in HF communications. Sweeping synchronously with a ionspheric sounder transmitter five to fifteen kilometers distant, the ionospheric sounder receiver sounds the paths and measures the height of the ionosphere, including E, sporadic-E, and F.

- Measurement data enables an HFDF/SSL (High Frequency Direction Finding / Single Site Location) system to calculate distance from a single DF site to a target transmitter
- Completely eliminates the need to predict specific propagations conditions in the HF bands vs date/time
- Fully automatic TCI sounders provide accurate real-time measurement of current conditions that affect ionospheric height
- Bistatic NVIS (Near-Vertical Incidence Sounding), the most-accurate method
- TCI is one of the first companies to manufacture ionospheric sounders, and remains one of only a few companies with the capability to manufacture them even today
